Long before the present storyline of the game, the Demon Lord Dhaos wreaked havoc in the land of Aselia. Four warriors, still unknown at the beginning, were able to seal him off using the power of two pendants.

Years later, young swordsman Cless Alvein and his bestfriend, the archer Chester Barklight of the village of Totus go off on a hunting trip, only to find their village razed to the ground when they return. Everyone in the town got killed by Mars and his army, including Chester's little sister Amy and both of Cless' parents. The two friends separate for a while, Chester wanting to give everyone a proper burial, and Cless going to the town of Euclid to bring news of what happened to his uncle who resides there. Unknown to him however, his uncle betrays him and hands him over to Mars. His father's memento, a pendant, is taken from him.
Within the jail, he meets Mint Adnade, who is, as he realizes, the daughter of the dead body found in the cell next to his. After a series of events, the two meet up with Chester again, as well as one of the previously introduced four warriors, Morrison. Morrison is aghast by the news of Cless' pendant being stolen, and storms off to follow Mars. The three adolescents, agitated of not doing anything, decide to follow him.
There, they witness first hand the revival of the Demon Lord Dhaos, and the powers he is capable of wielding. As a final resort, Morrison uses his powers to send Cless and Mint to the past timeline to look for two renowned people said to have fought off Dhaos before, Klarth F. Lester and Arche Klaine. Leaving Chester to stay as a decoy, the two are whisked away to 100 years in the past, where they must find the two said people and also find a way to go back to their time. They have to hurry, or they may return with more than just Mars' army annihilated...
